UK Heat Wave Breaks Down After Record Temperatures, Multiple Deaths
According to reports, the arrival of cooler Atlantic air will bring temperatures back toward normal seasonal levels, along with periods of rain and the possibility of thunderstorms in many parts of the country.
“We’re now starting to see this spell of very hot weather break down,” Met Office Chief Forecaster Chris Bulmer said. “By the weekend, temperatures should be much closer to average for the time of year with accompanying rainfall for many through the weekend and into the start of next week.”
The hot conditions prompted large numbers of people to visit rivers, lakes and reservoirs to seek relief from the heat. Reports linked the period of extreme weather to a dozen water-related deaths across the UK.
The heat wave also set a new May temperature record in England and Wales earlier in the week, with temperatures climbing to 35.1 degrees Celsius (95.2 degrees Fahrenheit) at Kew Gardens in west London.
