UK Challenges EU Steel Import Restrictions

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom is preparing to contest European Union plans to sharply reduce tariff-free steel imports, amid warnings from British producers that the move could have serious repercussions for the industry, a media outlet reported Thursday.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle is expected to raise the matter during discussions with EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic in Brussels on Friday, according to the report.
The dispute stems from EU proposals to revise its steel safeguard regime, which would significantly cut tariff-free import quotas for non-EU countries starting July 1.
Britain’s steel sector has cautioned that the new framework could be “devastating” for UK manufacturers, claiming it would limit access to one of their most vital export destinations.
Under the suggested measures, overall tariff-free steel imports into the EU from non-member states would be reduced by 47% compared with 2024 levels.
Concerns have been raised on both sides of the Channel, with industry leaders reportedly fearing that the disagreement could spark retaliatory trade actions by Britain.
This issue risks becoming another source of strain in UK-EU trade relations, despite recent efforts by both parties to strengthen cooperation following agreements designed to reset ties after Brexit.
