UK Defense Secretary Steps Down

(MENAFN) John Healey has resigned from his role as the UK defense secretary, stating he could no longer continue after the government failed to deliver the level of defense funding he considered essential to address escalating security challenges.

In a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which Healey admitted he “never expected to write,” the departing Cabinet member criticized the long-delayed defense investment plan, saying it did not allocate the necessary resources for the armed forces.

Healey emphasized: “This era for defense required further investment through the defense investment plan.” He highlighted that extensive cross-government work completed in January — overseen by himself, Starmer, and the chancellor — had confirmed the scale of the challenge and the mounting demands on defense.

Since then, Healey argued, the Prime Minister had been unable, and the Treasury unwilling, to commit the resources needed to safeguard the country amid rising threats. He noted that “the extra support is backloaded when the pressure of operations and imperative to speed up readiness to fight is in the first two years,” adding that spending would only rise to 2.68% of GDP in 2030, compared with 2.6% next year under current investment.
