UK Warns Companies of Sanctions Over Illegal West Bank Settlements
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband issued the warning on Monday, urging potential bidders to stay away from tenders connected to the E1 settlement project and highlighting the possible legal and reputational consequences of participating.
"We urge businesses and individuals not to proceed with bids for E1 construction tenders," Miliband said in a statement.
He stressed that those involved could face serious repercussions, particularly if their activities contribute to violations of international law.
"I want to be very clear with those considering engaging in the tendering process: we have created new powers allowing us to sanction individuals and companies involved in the construction of illegal settlements such as E1," Miliband said.
"This UK Government will not accept the continued displacement of Palestinians and the unlawful occupation that persists," he added.
London is also preparing further measures targeting economic activities linked to settlements. Miliband said the government intends to introduce legislation prohibiting imports of goods produced in illegal settlements and to pursue action against services that fund or enable their operations.
"The British people do not want to be supporting the construction of illegal settlements," he said.
Separately, the British government denounced the growing violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers across the occupied West Bank. It highlighted recent incidents involving officials from France, Belgium and Poland, a representative of the Catholic Church and a journalist from the United States.
